Pledge by:

Mrs. Mariyam Midhfa Naeem, Counsellor of Maldives to the United Nations

New York, 1 July 2015

Mister President,

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to speak on behalf of the Republic of Maldives in its capacity as a Member of the UN Women Executive Board. My delegation expresses its deep appreciation for the important work that UN-Women undertakes in promoting gender equality and empowerment of women around the world. It is indeed regrettable, that an ongoing funding gap endures, making it hard for UN-Women to carry out its crucial mandate, to realize its full potential and achieve gender equality by 2030. Therefore, we urge all nations to take action, within their respective capacities, to increase funding and make it possible for UN-Women to deliver the results we so desperately need.

Mister President,

Since it became a Member of the Executive Board in 2012, the Maldives has been proud to support the work of UN-Women, to ensure that women rights advancement remains a core element to achieving a sustainable future. Since 2008, the Maldives has consistently worked towards the advancement of women as a community, regardless of cultural, religious and economic specificities. The empowerment of women and gender equality remain priority areas for the Maldives and will continue as flagship issues for the Maldives in all areas of work, from Financing for Development to the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

At today’s pledging event, I have the honour to announce the decision of the Government of Maldives, to reaffirm its contribution to UN women as a symbol of our unyielding support.

Mister President,

The Maldives thanks all nations for their support, and wholeheartedly hopes that the organization’s total funding will be sufficient to achieve the mandate which we’ve established.

I thank you.
