Former President Nasheed Brought into Custody Under Court Order

Nasheed smiling as he is taken into custodyMaldives Police Service took former President Mohamed Nasheed into custody today in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll Faresmaathoda, after the Hulhumale Magistrate Court issued an order to the Police to bring him in.

The Hulhumale Magistrate Court ordered the Maldives Police Service yesterday to produce former President Mohamed Nasheed in court, to face charges over his use of the military to arrest and detain the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdulla Mohamed. Though former President Nasheed insisted the detention was due to the Judge's own corruption, the action came a day after this Judge had released two prisoners of conscience arrested by Nasheed.

Maldives supports UN resolution on Syria

UNGA Vote on Syria violenceThe United Nations General Assembly today, with overwhelming support adopted a resolution expressing its grave concern at the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the Syrian Arab Republic.

The resolution, which was tabled by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was designed to bring into context a number of issues of concern to the international community. These include the use of heavy weapons by Syrian security forces against civilian populations, the widespread and systematic gross violation of human rights, and concerns over the security of Syria’s biological and chemical weapons stockpiles.
