During the quarterly debate of the United Nations Security Council on the Middle East which was held today, the Maldives has welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2334, which reaffirms the illegality of Israeli settlements in the occupied territory of Palestine, and calls upon states to distinguish in their relevant dealings, between the territory of the State of Israel and the territories occupied since 1967.

H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations stated that this resolution was a demonstration of international political support for bringing an end to illegal Israeli settlements, and reiterated the call for a two state solution recognizing the sovereign and independent State of Palestine, based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Maldives also welcomed Resolutions 2328, 2332 and 2336, which address the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and affirmed the commitment of the Maldives to take action in the Council and Assembly to address and resolve this grave crisis of our time.

Additionally, the Maldives called upon Member States to urgently implement these resolutions in order to maintain the credibility of the United Nations, and welcomed initiatives by Member States for this purpose.

In addition to over 40 Member States, the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and Personal Representative of the Secretary General, as well as the Vice-Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People participated in the open debate.

UNGA7124 December 2016, New York: The main part of the seventy-first session of the General Assembly concluded on 23 December 2016 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim led the Maldives delegation to the seventy-first session. The Minister attended the high level segment of the session and delivered the Address statement at the General Debate on 24 September 2016. During the main part of the seventy-first session, the Maldives delegation delivered thirty-three statements and co-sponsored 42 resolutions on a range of issues including advancement of women, sustainable development, countering terrorism, situation in the Middle East and Palestine, reform of the Security Council and oceans and law of the sea. The delegation was also actively engaged on negotiations on a range of issues across the General Assembly's programme of work. This included negotiations on rights of the child and women, climate change, small island developing States, disaster risk reduction, and the situation in Syria.

07 December 2016, New York; The Maldives has stated that the responsibility of the protection of oceans should be collectively shared by the world, due to the interconnected nature of the oceans, and it's associated issues.

Speaking at the 54th Plenary Meeting of the 71st session of United Nations General Assembly, the Maldives also raised concerns about the biggest issues faced by the oceans today, including climate change, plastic pollution and marine littering. The Maldives emphasized the disproportionate impact these issues have on Small Island States, as most of their geography consists of oceans.

The proactive efforts of the Government of Maldives in conservation and sustainable use of oceans were highlighted; which include establishment of Marine Protected Areas, monitoring and protection of coral reefs, and the leading role in sustainable fisheries.

30 November 2016, New York; Today, at the United Nations General Assembly during its debate on 'The situation of Middle East the Maldives stressed on the importance of compromise and the productive engagement of the international community to resolve the conflicts in the Middle East.

Delivering the statement on behalf of the Maldives, Ms. Moomina Ibrahim, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the crucial importance of peace in the Middle East to the region and for the world as a whole. Noting that the perpetuating hostility and conflict in the occupied Palestine have compromised peace and security in the region for decades, the Maldives reiterated its call for the full realization of the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people.

In its statement, the Maldives expressed grave concern over the escalating violence and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria. It also reaffirmed its determination to support the cause of the Syrian people.

The Maldives statement further renewed its firm commitment to fight against terrorism and terrorist acts in all its forms and dimensions. The Maldives condemned 'attempts at attributing any terrorism to any religion, culture or tradition'.

In the statement delivered at the General Debate on the question of Palestine, Mr. Ahmed Fazeel, Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives emphasized that lasting peace could not be secured in the region without the prospect of a peaceful future for the children.
