Agenda Item 73(b): Promotion and Protection of Human Rights

Intervention by the Republic of Maldives to the Report by the Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

Statement by Ms. Farzana Zahir, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives

United Nations, New York, 29 October 2015

Thank you, Mr Chairman

My delegation would like to express its appreciation to the Special Rapporteur and his Report providing information on the human rights situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. We commend the Special Rapporteur for his efforts in the conduct of his mandate despite denial of access to a country visit.

Maldives supports the international human rights mandate holder and calls on countries to extend their cooperation to the UN mandate holders to facilitate their work.

Considering the challenges faced by the Special Rapporteur on his mandate noted in his Report, my delegation would like to hear the views of the Special Rapporteur on the viability of his proposal for a future accountability mechanism on the country involving a group of experts.

I thank you, Mr. Chairman
