Mr Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom was elected as the 6th President of the Republic of the Maldives. Today he took his oath of office at a Special Assembly of Parliament held at 1.00 this afternoon. The oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice, Uz Ahmed Faiz Hussain.

After the President was sworn-in, he was greeted with a 21-gun salute, followed by the playing of the National Anthem. Afterwards, the President signed the oath. The Chief Justice, Uz Ahmed Faiz Hussain and the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Mr Abdulla Shahid also signed the oath.

Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed was also sworn in as the second elected Vice President of the Maldives at the same Assembly. The oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice, Uz Ahmed Faiz Hussain. The Vice President, Cheif Justice and Speaker signed the oath thereafter.

The President and Vice President were elected after an annulled election on the 6th of October, a re-election on the 9th of November and a run-off election on the 16th of November,
