The Government

Executive Branch: Dr. Mohamed Waheed, President (since 7 Feburary 2012) – the President is both Chief of State and Head of Government (supported by a Cabinet of Ministers)

Last Presidential election held in October of 2008 (President elected for a five year term)

- Dr. Waheed acceded from the Vice Presidency when former President Nasheed resigned on 7 February 2012, before completing his tenure. The next elections are scheduled for July-October 2013 (as determiend by a constitutionally indepednent Elections Commission)

Legislative Branch: Unicameral People’s Majlis (77 members - all elected).
Elections: Last held 9 May 2009 (members elected for five year terms)
