In a statement delivered today at the General Assembly of the United Nations, theMaldives welcomed the General Assembly’s decision to grant the status of Non-MemberObserver State for Palestine as a landmark achievement. The Maldives was a co-sponsorof the resolution adopted at the General Assembly on Thursday that won Palestine theenhanced status. The Maldives also strongly backed the initiative by the Palestinians inits bid for full membership in the United Nations last year.

The Republic of the Maldives today supported United Nations reform as a means to executing the Millennium Development Goals, as well as the Sustainable Development framework, originating from the Rio+20 conference and currently being determined by the body. Speaking in the Plenary of the General Assembly of the United Nations, First Secretary Salim Waheed emphasized the need for a holistic approach towards meeting the world’s challenges.

The Maldives has requested the international community to enter into collaborative arrangements as the country embarks on an ambitious programme of low carbon footprint. The appeal was made by Ambassador Ahmed Sareer, Charge’ d’affaires, during a statement delivered at the United Nations General Assembly at the Second Committee under agenda item on Sustainable Development.

The Republic of the Maldives has called for the revamping ofthe Smooth Transition Process for the graduation of countries from Least Developed Country statuswhile drawing attention to the vulnerabilities of island nations. Speaking in the Second Committeeof the General Assembly of the United Nations today, Ambassador Ahmed Sareer stated thatthough “Maldives had success in pioneering new measures to mitigate the effects of graduation ... thequestion of whether those efforts were enough has not been answered in the positive.”
