Today at the General Assembly plenary, the Maldives drew attention to the need for a human rights-based approach to development. As the Human Rights Council presented its report to the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of integrating human rights as we move towards two landmark events in 2015: the post-2015 development agenda and the international climate negotiations in Paris.

dmagwomenday14Amidst a wave of positive announcements about plans for substantial greenhouse gas reductions and contributions to the Green Climate Fund leading up to the G20 in Australia, the Foreign Minister of the Maldives, the Hon. Dunya Maumoon, issued the following statement:

“We stand at a watershed moment in the effort to address climate change. After decades of false starts and broken promises, the world is finally starting to see the central components of meaningful agreement come together in time for the U.N. climate negotiations in Lima at the end of the month, which is meant to lay the ground work for a legally binding agreement, applicable to all parties, next year in Paris.

“The announcement that the world’s two biggest emitters, the U.S. and China, are serious about putting the world on a sustainable energy pathway, will help revive confidence in the international community’s ability to address this crisis.

Maldives calls for a SIDS-specific seat on the Security Council

Deputy Permanent Representative Jeffrey Salim Waheed speaks for Maldives on UN Security Council RefomrThe Maldives has urged the inclusion of a SIDS-specific seat on the United Nations Security Council, as the debate on the Council's reform took place today at the General Assembly.
The Maldives argued that a seat allocated to small island developing states is an important and necessary step towards achieving equitable representation at the Council.

The Maldives drew attention to the legitimacy deficit facing the Security Council, given that certain regions and groups of States have been under-represented in the non-permanent membership and completely excluded from the permanent membership of the Council. Even though all UN Member States are technically eligible to run for a seat, in practice few small states have success due to the prohibitive cost of campaigning for election.

Minister Dunya and PR Sareer at Ministerial“Our destiny is determined by our smart ideas: and smarter actions” says Minister Dunya at the closing session of the Ministerial Meeting of AOSIS being held in Seychelles from 11 to 12 November 2014. Speaking on the arrangements by the Maldives, on taking over the Chair of AOSIS on 1 January 2015, Minister Dunya assured the membership of AOSIS that the Maldives stands ready to take on the responsibilities of the Chairmanship during what would be a crucial year for small island developing states. The Minister further thanked the AOSIS membership for the confidence and trust placed in the Maldives, as well as recognised the  leadership of Nauru over the past three years.
