heallthy ocean palauThe Maldives has emphasized that Small States should more aptly called “Large Ocean States”.  This was highlighted by His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan, Former President who is attending the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly as Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Maldives.

Speaking at the high-level event entitled: "Healthy Oceans & Seas: Paving the Way Towards a Sustainable Development Goal", President Waheed briefed the audience on the work undertaken by the Maldives in the preservation of the oceans and seas.  He highlighted Maldives' sustainable method of pole and line fishing as a tradition that has been maintained for time immemorial.  In the conservation of sharks, Maldives has implemented a shark sanctuary in its territorial waters since 2010.  Moreover, on a journey to expand area-based conservation measures, the entire Baa Atoll of the Maldives was declared as a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Maldives hosts an Informal Meeting of the SAARC Council of Ministers in New York

saarcinformalmeetngThe Maldives today, in its capacity as Chair of SAARC, hosted an Informal Meeting of the SAARC Council of Ministers on the sidelines of the sixty-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly. This will be the last time Maldives hosts a SAARC Council of Ministers ahead of Nepal taking over the Chairmanship in November 2014.

Speaking at the Meeting, Minister Dunya recalled the landmark decisions that have been taken, and the important discussions that have been held during the past year. She thanked the SAARC Members for the support extended to the Maldives, and reiterated Maldives hope to see a SAARC that is relevant and robust in an ever-changing world.

The member countries heard a briefing from the Secretary General, about the developments under the mandate given by the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), as well as on developing a Commonwealth position on the post-2015 development agenda. The Ministers also discussed preparations for CHOGM 2015, and other global issues of importance to the Commonwealth.
