Maldives on Executive Board of UN WomenThe Republic of Maldives today was elected by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations to serve a three-year term on the Executive Board of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). At the election that was held during the resumed session of the Economic and Social Council, Maldives as a member of the Executive Board will aim to strengthen the work of the organization in meeting the needs of women all around the world. This is the first time that the Maldives has been elected to a functional body of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Dr. Waheed and Vice President Waheeddeen MaldivesThe Majlis today approved the Vice President, Mr Waheed Deen, and Cabinet Ministers proposed by President Dr Mohamed Waheed.  The vote was unanimous of those present and voting, which included 46 members representing all the political parties that have seats in the Majlis.  Though most of former President Nasheed's MDP members walked out of the chamber, 1 MDP MP remained to vote for the new Vice President and Cabinet Ministers.

Cabinet of the Republic of Maldives Nasheed WaheedThe cabinet, in today’s meeting, decided to launch a six-month long civic education campaign to encourage communal activities and to increase people’s participation in building responsible citizens focused on community development. The cabinet made this decision after discussing a paper submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs indicating that many citizens were unaware of the democratic responsibilities that went hand in hand with the democratic rights enshrined in the 2008 Constitution.

The President’s call for election in July 2013, as the earliest date permitted by the Constitution, has been met with overwhelming public support by the leaders of the major political parties, including the DRP, PPM and JP.The CMAG’s primary mandate is to defend the Constitutions of the Commonwealth member states, and the Maldivian Constitution is very clear on when Presidential elections can be held. As such, the government is confident that once the CMAG is fully aware of this, they will come out in support of July 2013 elections.

The MDP’s advocacy for elections earlier than July 2013 merely serves to highlight the persistent constitutional violations of the previous administration.
