At the ceremony, which was held in the United Nations Headquarters, AmbassadorSareer conveyed the greetings of the President, the Government and the peopleof Maldives to the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The Maldives has called on the United Nations General Assembly to urgently address theeffective management of oceans resources. Speaking at the UNGA plenary meeting underthe Agenda Item on Oceans and the Law of the Sea, the Maldives delegation reiteratedthe necessity of addressing these issues for countries who rely on marine resources as aneconomic staple. Specific to the Maldives, tourism and fisheries, both of which rely onocean resources, are the country’s two largest economic contributors.

In a statement delivered today at the General Assembly of the United Nations, theMaldives welcomed the General Assembly’s decision to grant the status of Non-MemberObserver State for Palestine as a landmark achievement. The Maldives was a co-sponsorof the resolution adopted at the General Assembly on Thursday that won Palestine theenhanced status. The Maldives also strongly backed the initiative by the Palestinians inits bid for full membership in the United Nations last year.

The Republic of the Maldives today supported United Nations reform as a means to executing the Millennium Development Goals, as well as the Sustainable Development framework, originating from the Rio+20 conference and currently being determined by the body. Speaking in the Plenary of the General Assembly of the United Nations, First Secretary Salim Waheed emphasized the need for a holistic approach towards meeting the world’s challenges.
